Breadcrumbs

Advances in genomics are reducing the cost of genome sequencing exponentially. This in turn has the potential to radically transform our lives – and ESR is at the forefront of this scientific revolution in Aotearoa. ESR Genomics Week, which runs from 7-11 November, is an opportunity to bring together researchers from across the country to learn from experts in the field about different aspects of genomics, including sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Sessions below are online and can be registered for at no cost.

Monday, 7 Nov 1-4pm: Genomics in action

(external link)

Join New Zealand and international speakers online to hear about how they have used sequencing in their laboratories or for outbreak situations.

Talks include:

A/Prof Amy Jennison (Queensland Health): Genomics for public health surveillance and outbreak response in QLD, Australia.

Dr Susan Morpeth (Middlemore Hospital): Carbapenemases on the burns unit.

Dr Max Bloomfield (Wellington SCL): Integrating low-cost next generation sequencing into the routine workflow of a front-line clinical microbiology laboratory.

Dr Olin Silander (Massey University): Rapid profiling of antibiotic resistance genes using nanopore sequencing.

Thursday, 10 Nov 2-3pm: How genomics can inform decision making

(external link)

Join us for a discussion on how genomics can inform national and local decision making for the control of human and animal pathogens.

Prof Nigel French (Massey University)

Friday 11 Nov 10am-1pm: Genomics in your laboratory

(external link)

Join us for online discussions around the practical implementation of sequencing in laboratories. Discussions will include:

•    costings to set up WGS and writing a business case
•    validation and process set-up
•    clinical and public health applications
•    future developments
•    reporting.

To register for any of these sessions, contact wgs_seminar2022@esr.cri.nz by 3 November.
