The main purpose of surveillance is to provide information for action. Information provided by regular surveillance reports enables effective monitoring of rates and distribution of diseases, detection of outbreaks, monitoring of interventions, and predicting emerging hazards.
ESR undertakes surveillance of notifiable diseases in New Zealand and manages the national notifiable disease database (EpiSurv) on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The surveillance reports include analyses and interpretation of surveillance data, primarily from notifiable diseases, influenza and sexually transmitted infections. See below our monthly and annual surveillance reports, annual summary tables (tier 1 statistics) and other useful resources.
The dashboard below has been developed by ESR to provide enhanced access to notifiable disease data. For each disease, visualisations are available for the number of cases and the rate per 100,000, both nationally and by district health board. Further breakdowns are provided by age, sex and ethnicity.

Annual summary tables
The latest release of the annual summary tables (tier 1 statistics) for notifiable diseases is available below. These tables include all notifiable diseases collected and reported by ESR. Note that the classification used here matches the notifiable disease schedule and may differ to that used elsewhere for disease reporting.
This data is published annually on the last Tuesday in February.

Tier 1 statistics are superceded by the data and tables in the annual report. Please see annual reports above and in the archive for accurate data in other years.
All agencies producing Tier 1 statistics are required to comply with the principles and protocols for producers of Tier 1 Statistics. More information, including a list of all Tier 1 statistics, is available on the Statistics New Zealand website.
